Active Learning Outside Classrooms

Holistic Development

“When educators view children as competent and capable, the learning program becomes a place of wonder, excitement, and joy for both the child and the educator”

The Crayons Early Childhood Curriculum defines an integrated approach to teaching and learning for children of ages 9 months to 6 years. The purpose of the program is to establish a strong foundation for learning in the early years and to do so in a safe, caring, play-based, and academically enriching environment.

Our pedagogical philosophy is inspired by the Intentional Teaching over the Montessori Method and the Creative Curriculum. Our whole-child development framework is defined around 4 guiding principles and focuses on the development of 8 key foundational skills in children.

Learning through play based enquiry

We believe that children learn best when they can inquire into areas of their interest through meaningful interactions with adults and peers. Engaging young children through play-based inquiry helps create a natural love for learning in them. At The Crayons, educators embed opportunities for learning through play - indoors and outdoors, through structured and unstructured play. Play helps children build strong communication skills, self-regulation, social skills, persistence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Explicit focus on foundational literacy & math

They are more important in today’s world driven by collaboration, communication, science, and technology. At The Crayons, we have moved away from worksheets and other rote learning methods to develop these skills. Instead, our literacy and math programs are integrated with all aspects of a child’s time in school, throughout the day. We have dedicated Math and Literacy time in the day for problem-solving and math-based inquiry and developing phonics, reading, and speaking skills.
